BISHOP CONRAD DE VITO
Founder

Bishop Albert Conrad De Vito, born on March 21, 1904, in Provvidenti, Italy, was a Capuchin friar and a man of remarkable vision and dedication. Ordained as a priest on June 11, 1927, he arrived in India in 1932, where he devoted his life to ecclesiastical service, education, and social welfare. His early assignments included serving as Chaplain of St. Joseph’s College in Nainital and later as Rector of St. Joseph’s Seminary in Allahabad. He then became the Vicar General of the Diocese of Allahabad, showcasing leadership and administrative skills foundational to his future role as Bishop.

In December 1946, De Vito was appointed the first Bishop of the newly formed Diocese of Lucknow, formally taking possession in February 1947. His tenure as bishop was marked by his passionate commitment to education, social service, and uplifting disadvantaged communities. He was instrumental in founding numerous institutions, including Anand Bhawan School, the Society of the Maids of the Poor in 1951, orphanages, hospitals, clinics, and even a university. These endeavors reflected his holistic approach to community building—addressing spiritual, educational, and medical needs.

Bishop De Vito was deeply aware of the transformative power of education and social care. His initiatives emphasized providing opportunities to the poor and marginalized while fostering discipline and strong moral values. He also established old age homes and social service centers, broadening the church’s role in public welfare beyond traditional ministry.

He passed away in Bologna, Italy, on November 16, 1970. Notably, his remains were later moved to the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Lucknow, underscoring the enduring respect and admiration for his work in India.

"Child Care" Bishop Conrad School is named to honor his vision and mission. The school embodies his legacy by prioritizing quality education imbued with Christian values, inclusivity, and a commitment to service. The institution strives to foster not only academic excellence but also the preservation of faith, language, culture, and community—ideals central to Bishop Conrad De Vito’s lifelong work.

His life’s work continues to inspire educational and social institutions in the region, carrying forward his principles of discipline, charity, and vision for a just and compassionate society.
